Getaway ! Himalayan Eco- Trekking & Expedition has yet another marvelous off beaten trail to offer you. Amongst the six or more trekking routes within Annapurna region with different character, altitude and duration. In this page, you will find some information about the new trekking in Annapurna which still remains as a virgin trail. A short trekking along Mardi Himal ridge, can be commenced from Pokhara to Phedi ( Baglung High way ) and walk to Dhampus following the regular Annapurna Base Camp trail up to Pitum Deurali where one turns this main trial to Mardi Himal. Though, it is not popularly known to be another possible trekking route, the trail that it follows, continues through the forest and is very serene compared to the busier trail from Phedi. One can encounter only few trekkers during the entire journey. There are basic lodges more like a home stay offering simple rooms, no dining and no toilets to suit your basic needs yet enjoyable enough to get to know the friendly families from Siding Village. Camping trekking is suggested for a group of 4 and above. The view from Low Camp is superb, Mount Machhapuchare visible from the valley. From the forest camp to the low camp, the trail continues through the forest. At Low Camp, there are two basic lodges, one even with a basic dining room with open fire.
Approximately after an hour, above the Low Camp along trail to High Camp, towards the west, there is a spectacular view to Annapurna in the South and Hiunchuli. The trail continues along the Mardi Himal ridge mainly on the grass with some isolated rhododendron bushes along the way. Look out for colourful Danphe, pheasant on this section of the trek. The lodge at High Camp is larger than lodges at Low Camp and Forest Camp, this one has eight rooms and a separate dining room with heater. The view of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) from the lodge is exceptional. Get up early to witeness the breathtaking sunrise and the miraculous look of the mountains then walk up the ridge towards Mardi Himal. There is a logically well established trail through the grass with a few steeper sections, as a whole not too demanding though. Look out for the dzos (yak/ cow crossbreds) grazing up here as well and more of Danphe, our national bird and pheasants. In the summer the sheep and goats from lower villages are brought up to graze. You will pass a number of herders’ huts along the way depending on the situation of climate.
The Base camp is dotted at an altitude of 4400 meters from where magnificent views of entire Annapurna can be enjoyed including Mardi Himal. These days, Mardi Himal Expedition is also becoming popular amongst the climbers. On your way back downwards, one can follow different trail down to Siding village instead of the one that follows Mardi Himal ridge to reach Pitam Deurali which is a better option for a circuit trek and so that you can view traditional and culturally rich villages in Mardi Valley. Siding village has some home stay options available for you. At breakfast, you can enjoy the freshl milk and other local delicacies. Couple of interesting villages in this high altitude namely Lumre, Kalimati–a village inhabited by Brahman and Ghale- mixed Brahman and Gurung are equally fascinating to learn their way of life and culture. Overall, to enjoy a new trek, this would be a good choice if you are looking for an alternative to the busy trails of Annapurna Sanctuary. However, the trek is never short of superb mountain views, forest, amazing landscapes and rich, traditional settlements.
