Palpa city - Tansen: The former capital of the Magar kingdom of Tanahun, Tansen (Palpa) is a romantic medieval hill town, perched high above the Kali Gandaki River on the road between Butwal and Pokhara. The narrow, winding streets are full of Newari shop-houses and temples and most of the centre is too steep for cars, which all adds to Tansen's charm. Few tourists make it out this way, but it's easy to fill several days exploring the town and there are some excellent walks in the hills. e Tansen Durbar compound in 2006.
Some excellent walks to viewpoints and villages around Tansen and there are great views over the bowl-shaped Madi Valley from several points around town. A sheet of mist normally hangs over the valley till mid-morning, earning it the nickname 'White Lake'. For sweeping Himalaya views, head up to Shreenagar Danda, the forested peak above Tansen.
A 25 kilometer road off the main highway connecting Pokhara and Kathmandu brings you to an ancient Gorkha - the untouched and captivating town of Nepal! Some 300 years ago, Nepal was divided into 50 tiny states, and Gorkha was one of them. King Prithivi Narayan Shah, the founder of `Shah Dynasty' which runs Nepal today, unified Nepal into one kingdom. His Gorkha palace resides on top of a hill at an altitude of 3281 feet (about 1000 meter) The King would watch-over his people as far as his eyes could see from the tallest palace in the very center of Nepal. Gorkha is also the home of Gurkhas - the legendary brave warriors who fought with knives against guns. To reach the durbar, you must climb an exhausting stairway of 1500 stone steps. Most pilgrims enter through the western gate , emerging on an open terrace in front of the exquisite Kalika Mandir, built in the reign of King Ram Shah ( 1606 -36), but extensively remodeled over the years, the temple is a psychedelic fantasy of carved peacocks, demons and serpents. The other major structure in the compound is Dhuni Pati , the formar palace of Prithvi Narayan Shah. Behind the palace is the mausoleum of Guru Gorakhanath, a reclusive saint who acted as a spiritual guide for the young Prithvi Narayan Shah. There are more historic monuments in the old part of Gorkha such as Ratna Mandir, Temple of Vishnu, Mahadev, Ganesh temple, Bhimsen, Tallo Durbar built in 1835 and forts.
