TRIP AN OVERVIEW
These days' expert and frequent Himalayan travelers will tell you that there is no place on earth to be explored which is not true yet only because of Dolpo trek in far western Nepal. There is certainly at least one completely virgin place left on this planet is only Dolpo or Upper Dolpo. That very few people from the outside world have ever been there doesn't mean that such a unspoiled destination doesn't exist. It's real adequate, and you might even pass on to it as Shangri-la, although it's quite challenging to get there. 3 weeks or longer trek, dolpo having wonderful landscapes, monasteries is a home of the Blue Sheep ( Bharal ) ,secure inhabitant of the snow Leopard and nest of Himalayan birds, the region is cut off from the rest of the world by the Himalayan massif. The trek is possible right after the winter snowmelt and before the summer monsoon when torrential rains turn the rivers in to raging torrents. A wild and harsh land with almost no tourists groups, few hikers, and with, here and there, a few villages situated very far from each other may give you a feeling like you are far away from the human crowd. Since there are several high passes in upper Dolpo trek of over 20000 feet, where altitude sickness may claim your life at any moment so primary fist aid kids and physical condition should be well prepared in advance.
In terms of time of year the best time to do this trek is during the month of May to October, this gives one the best chance of crossing the high passes out to Jomsom. September is probably more popular with trekking groups however often the passes are icy making travel impossible for the pack animals. We normally commence the trek from Juphal and end in Jomsom the Annapurna coca cola trial and fly out to Pokhara however there are also different ways to reach Dolpa from Jumla to Phoksundo Lake crossing Khampa villages. The Khampa came from East Tibet, and you still see signs of their old religion, and shrillness of their local gods. You reach the Bheri River Valley after crossing MauriLagna (3820 m). From Kaigan the trail diverges, one way leading over Kagmara La (5115 m.), the other over the low Balangra La (3760 m.), and then you follow the Bheri up to Dunai. There is also an airport close to it. The trail from here to Phoksundo is steep (up and down) and narrow. At Phoksundo Lake you can see the highest waterfall of Nepal (330 m.), descending in several cascades. There are temples, shrines around the lake, and a good view on Mt. Kanjirowa. From Ringmo near Phoksundo Lake there is also a trail leading to the region of Tarap to the east. If you take this route, you have to cross two passes higher than 5000 m.
Situated in a remote Nepal, there are no roads, inhabitant of small villages except in Juphal Bazzar , no doctors, almost no medical supplies and rare possibility of any rescue in Upper Dolpo which is too high for helicopters to fly. So, an experienced team through well managed agency like GETAWAY ! Himalayan Eco-Trekking Pvt. Ltd could be your right partner to complete the entire journey on time safely. We have dedicated Sherpas and expert cook and high altitude porters who can easily find the alternative trails even necessary. The birth place of National Hero MrThinleLondrup who was nominated as a star of the Academy Award for film "Himalaya" previously known as "The Caravan" was filmed in Upper Dolpo which was short listed for best foreign film in the year 2000. Averaging up to nine hours a day of hellish trekking, most of it straight uphill on difficult trails starting from Jhupal airport till Jomsom but the scenery cannot be accurately described. We walk through the beautiul villages and trials named as to Dangarjong (3290m), Yak Kharka (3540m), MilungKharka (4735m) via Sangda La (5460m), RamananKharka (4627m) via Chharka La (4920m), to SamlingGompa(3800m), SheyGompa (4500m) via Shey La (5010m) etc. The most beautiful lake in the world and perhaps the source of the legend of Shangril –La the SeyPhokosundo Lake is situated at 15000 feet above from sea level, shimmers and alpine lake of translucent turquoise, said to be over 610 feet deep.
A perfect pre-planning of the trek While in Kathmandu is the most since even some maps for Upper Dolpo however have found out of date and inaccurate. There are no current itineraries with reliable trail descriptions available and even the basic description in the new edition of Lonely Planet "Trekking in Nepal Himalaya" describes the old, disused trail for several sections. During our Kathmandu meetings and even earlier then you land in Kathmandu airport, we at Splendid Holidays Treks and Expedition team figure out the itinerary from daily discussions with the help of our trek crew, therefore it is essential that the Sirdar and/or cook has visited this region on a previous occasion when crossing the Himalayas into Upper Dolpo requires the utmost courage and stamina. There is only one entrance, the incredible Kang La pass, which requires a ten-hour nearly vertical climb to cross. Moreover, Up until 1996 foreigners were not allowed access to this region so the culture has largely been unchanged and unaffected by tourism. Of particular interest is SheyGompa, this is revered as one of most important in Upper Dolpo where twice a year many pilgrims make a kora (or circuit) of Crystal Mountain this is known as a younger brother of Mount Kailash in Tibet.
A satellite phone and all food should be brought in with the trekking group as it is impossible to purchase locally in the respective villages throughout the trip and all kitchen staff along with porters walk with all stuff and supplies for almost a week from the road head near Surket to Juhpal. Finally, Dolpa is no tourist tea-house trek, and you will not find our route outlined in any of the Himalayan trekking guidebooks. It is rugged, unspoiled, and unforgettable - arguably the best trek in all of Nepal. The Dolpo region is a natural collection of high passes, rare fauna and sweeping vistas which is enriched by the traditional Tibetan cultural heritage. This region is surrounded by Dhaulagiri and Tibet from south and north respectively is regarded as a blend of natural and cultural phenomena. Special trekking permit of US$ 500 is required which you can obtain through us in one or working days from Department of Immigration, Kathmandu, Nepal.
